THE ASHBURTON CLUB. OPENING OF THE SEASON. Prospects of a particularly successful season were shown at the opening of the Ashburton Golf Club on Saturday afternoon. A thick drizzling rain fell for the greater part of the day and it was expected that- only a few players would turn out, hut with 40 taking part the opening match was one of the most successful held at the beginning of the season. Reference to tho enthusiasm of members was made by Mr W. H. Amos (president) when ho officially opened the season. He remarked on the splendid condition of tho course, and said that tho keenness of members, many of whom were new players this- year, gave a very promising outlook for the season. A mixed foursome was played during the afternoon, Miss E. Brown and W. P. Anderson being the winners with a score of 85-13-72. Air and Airs L. E. Carter were runners-up with 96-23-73. . Others among the principal scorers were: Miss Z. Bonnington and J. T. Smith 86-11-74. Air and Afrs J. At. Afcßae 90-15-75. All- and Airs E. Brophy 98-23-75. Airs F. V. Piper and 1.
