ENTERTAINMENTS.

ST. JAMES THEATRE. The. world’s greatest cattle highway the historic Chisholm Trail, forms the background of “The Texans,” Paramount’s drama of the men who built up the great ranching empire of the American Southwest, concluding at the St. James Theatre this evening. The starring voles 1 are taken by Joan Bennett and' Randolph Scott, while May Robson, Walter Brennan, and Robert Cumming arc also cast in important positions. & A sensation as a. book “Anthony Adverse,” from the novel by Hervey Allen, has made a similar hit as a film, and wlierever it has appeared it has been acclaimed “one of the best.” Add so it should with such a east. There is Fredric March as Anthony himself, Olivia De Haulland as Angela Guessippi, Edmond Gwenn as .John Bonnyfeather, Claude Rains as Don Luis, Anita Louise as Maria, Louis Hayiward as Denis Moore, Stiff! Duna as Nelota, and a host of other talented players who well portray the characters of the dramatic story. Quickly changing scenes are the background for a drama'of human life, its loves and hates, its hopes and its disappointments; its desires and its passions; its vain and futile struttings and its achievements. Fredric March, has given the screen some wonderful portrayals in the past but never has he risen t<\ the heights of dramatic fire as in the title role of this picture. The whole film takes 2J hours to screen. SCOTTISH SOCIETY DANCE. The Ashburton County Scottish Society’s dance,on Saturday was again largely attended. The music was supplied by Cook’s orchestra. Monte Carlo dances were won by Miss' S. Williamson and Mr L. Gabites, Miss P. Davidson and Mr Keith. Extras were played by Mr L. Chapman and Mr Forsyth. Messrs T. McGregor and G.
