MAYFIELD SHOW

THE NINETEENTH EXHIBITION. FIXTURE MARRED BY RAIN. THE CONCLUDING AWARDS. The Mayfield Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s show on Saturday would have been an outstanding success had the weather been better. As it was, heavy, misty rain fell for the greater part of the day, jxnd conditions became extremely unpleasant. This interfered to a large extent with the staging of exhibits and the start of the judging, but once these were under way the work went through smartly, and results were available for the public at an hour not far behind the usual. Had the weather been fine there would have been a very large attendance of patrons. People from all over the district and friim many parts far distant attended. The gate takings amounted to £6l, compared with £lO9 last year. Even this was surprisingly high for the state of the day, and the Association is. to be congratulated on the fact that its exhibitions in' tinpast have been so favourably received by the public that some hundreds should have ventured out on Saturday. The conditions called for some rearrangement of the schedule, but this was quickly overcome and the officials and the. judges, facing an unenviable task, went to work with a will. The president (Mr®W. N. Lowery) was a busy man all day and he had splendid backing from the members of his committee, and the secretary (Mr C. Sewell). »As conditions brightened in the middle of the afternoon, more people were able to move’ about the grounds and view the exhibits, but the greater part of the day they kept in their cars, which were drawn up round the ring, two and three deep.. The ring competitions were got off smartly, and there were few delays between the judging of the different classes, as a loud-speaker system kept competitors up-to-date with the progress of the work and they were able to keep -in touch much better than would otherwise have been the case in' such circumstances. The ring events proved to be most attractive and interesting, particular attention beihg giyen by patrons to the light horse events, while the younger competitors on their ponies made a brave showing. Quality was again the keynote throughout. Sheep, cattle, horses and dogs were of the best type and among them were some that were really outstanding. The grain and other produce sections were much better than might Jiave been expected after recent weather, the roots, particularly, being very good. The produce shed sections produced some remarkably good exhibits, the number being greatly increased over the exhibits of a year ago. Awards made after the “Guardian’ went to press on Saturday were: —
