RUGBY FOOTBALL.
THE TOUR OF SOUTH AFRICA. METHOD OF SELECTION CONSIDERED. WELLINGTON, This Day. Considerable discussion took place at a meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Council, on the matter of tours. Mr S. S. Dean was in the chair and the New Zealand selector ('Mr E. McKenzie) was present by invitation. A proposition was made by Dr. G. J. Adams that a New Zealand team he sent on tour throughout the Dominion next season, playing a series of matches, the final one of which would be against the Rest, the idea being to give the- New Zealand selector every opportunity of getting the best team for South Africa in 1940.
After a long discussion, it was decided that such a tour next season was, under all the circumstances, impracticable. It was resolved That the New Zealand team fop* South Africa be selected next year and that the chosen players he subjected to examination by medical officers a month before the departure of the team in 1940. It was pointed out that the team would have to leave in April or early in May.
Information of a. favourable nature was received from English, sources regarding the proposed visit by a university team from England to New Zealand next season. Official word from the English Rugby Union is awaited.
The matter of a visit by a Fijian team was discussed and the executive was empowered to submit a report giving the proposed itinerary and the estimated cost.
