THE DEFENCE OF AUSTRALIA. ADDITION OF 10,000 MEN. NEARLY 100,000 AVAILABLE.

The Minister of Defence (Mr Thorby) said that of 10,000 men the Government planned to add to the Permanent Force, bringing its strength up to 20,000, 50 per cent, would be allotted to the Army, 20 per cent, to the Navy, and 30 per cent, to the Air Force. He added that Australia could at present mobilise a force of nearly 100,000 men, comprising a Permanent Force of 10,170, a citizen force of 38,000, and 50,000 members of rifle clubs.
