THE WEATHER.

CHILLY, RAINY CONDITIONS. Chilly, rainy conditions were experienced in Ashburton to-day. Rain began to fall last night and continued intermittently throughout to-day. Up to 9 a.m. to-day 15 points had been registered. The maximum temperature yesterday was 58.3 degrees and the minimum 44 degrees. The barometer stood at 29.63 inches this morning. CONDITIONS DURING OCTOBER. The weather in Ashburton during Octobey was very changeable, for although there were a good many fine, sunny days, there were also many days when the sky was completely overcast and conditions were chilly and threatening. The longest period of warm sunny weather was at the very beginning o-f the month), when for almost a week mild north-west winds kept the temperature well up. Toward the middle of October there was another wnp'in spell, and on the 19th the thermometer reading wjent up 'to 73.9 degrees, the highest since last March. Other warm days were:' October 5, 73.7 degrees; October 18, 72.2 degrees; October 1, 71.6 degrees; October 3, 71.12 degrees. Only four frosts were recorded in the month, four degrees being tne maximum intensity. y

Rain ,fell on nine days, although on many other occasions conditions ' were overcast and threatening. The total fall was 2.47 inches, the heaviest rain being on October 11, when 85 points were recorded. Rain fell heavily one weekend, 90 points (being registered on the 23rd and, 24th. Conditions have been miserable for the last day or two and 37 points of rain have fallen since Saturday. The maximum temperatures during the month varied from 54.2 degrees on October 11 and 25 to 73.9 degrees on October 19. The * minimum readings

of the thermometer ranged from 31.4

degrees on October 7 to 54.8 degrees on October 4.

North-west- winds prevailed, from October 1 to 5, but since then they have been most changeable, the few south-westers usually bringing rain. The barometer readings ranged from 29.34 inches on October 22 to 30.04 inches on October 1 and 12. Those last two days wen.e the only occasions that the barometer showed a reading of over 30 inches

The Government Meteorologist, at noon to-day, issued the following statement regarding the weather A. depression is passing off the Dominion and the pressure has commenced to rise. A slight secondary is developing, however, on the West Coast. An anti-cyclone covers Eastern Australia. The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oamaru is as follows: Winds, rather variable at first, but southerly or south-easterly, soon prevailing and freshening. Weather dull and humid, with intermittent rain. Temperatures rather cold. Seas slight to moderate, but rising.
