LOOKING BACK.

FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Nov. 1, 1888). Stranded Whale.—Yesterday morning a couple of lads found a stranded whale on the beach near the Longbeach homestead. The creature, which is over 20ft in length, appears to be a bottle-nosed whale. Last night the station hands went to the beach in force, with ropes and other appliances for dragging the 'inhale on to day land, but the united efforts of about 50 men proved unequal to the task, which had accordingly to be abandoned. To-day a number of men are engaged, cutting up the monster as it lies in the surf and bringing the pieces to the shore, where they will be boiled down for the sake of the oil, a good deal of which is expected to he obtained. The Ashburton Domain. —A meeting of the Domain Board was held at the Council Chambers yesterday, Mr E. G. Wright in the chair. A motion, previously tallied, that the Government bo asked to vest the Domain in tho Ashburton Borough Council was put and carried. A motion by Mr W. C. Walker, seconded by the Mayor, “That the thanks of the Board are due to the chairman, Mr Wright, for his services,” was passed and the meeting terminated.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Nov. 1, 1913). Concert at Tinwald. —The Tinwald Sports Club’s concert- on Monday night in the Tinwald Oddfellows’ Hall was a. great success. An excellent programme was provided. Songs wene given -by Mrs T. Gibbs, Mrs Watson and the school children; Messrs D. McDonald, C. Gass, T. Gibbs, Humphreys, Watson, and C. Gimson; musical monologues by Miss Kennedy, and recitations by Messrs Thomas, D. Hickman, and, Humphreys. The hall was packed to the doors by an audience which demanded encores from most of the performers. The concert was followed by a dance, 'which was thoroughiy enjoyed by the large number present. Music was supplied by Mr A. Simpson, and Mr A. Millichamp acted as Master of Ceremonies, liie only fact to be regretted is that the hall was not large enough to admit all who had hoped to he present. The evening was a fitting ending to a didst successful day for the Sports Club. At tbs termination of the concert programme, Mr Cow (president) and Mill. A. Pearce (vice-president), thanked the performers for their generous help, and also the public for the way they had supported the sports and the concert.
