FIRE RAGING
IN THE TARARUA RANGES. FINE SCENIC AREA THREATENED MANY CITY PEOPLE ON SCENE, fPer Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Fire of unknown origin is raging in the Tararuas in the vicinity of the Manchant Range, and is menacing the surounding native bush,'which is considered to be almost the finest in New Zealand. A party of 21 members of the Tararua Tramping Club, who visited the ranges this morning, were apparently the first to observe the flames. They notified the authorities in Wellington, who made an instant appeal to trampers and others to volunteer aid. The party actually at the scene of the fire got to work immediately to check the flames, and were assisted by men working at the Kaitoke camp job. A large number of people, well-armed with axes, slashers and first-aid material, have gone out from the city. With a strong north-westerly blowing, the flames are sweeping down the Manchant Rrange into the Aauheranikau Valley.
