OBITUARY.
MR J. J. MEIKLE. (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, November 26. Mr John James Meikle, died to-day. aged 93. Mr Meikle’s name had been frequently before the Now Zealand Public during the last 40 years. was convicted at Invercargil in 1887 on a charge of sheep stealing and sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment with hard labour. On bis discharge he proceeded on a charge cl perjury against a witness who had testified against him at the trial. The prosecution succeeded and the witness was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment. Mr Meikle then petitioned Parliament lor compensation, and in 1897 was granted £6OO in full settlement of his claim. Since then Mr Meikle at intervals unsuccessfully petitioned succeeding Governments ~ for further compensation, and when the present Government came into office he again by petition urged bis claim.
