ASHBURTON RACES

THE SUMMER MEETING. HANDICAP TO QUEEN OF SONG. BABBLE SUCCESSFUL. Conditions could not have been more appropriate than was the case to-day for the holding of the Ashburton County Racing Club’s summer meeting, and the programme, an attractive one with well-filled fields, drew a large attendance. The track was in fast shape'. The Ashburton Silver Band was in attendance. Richmond’s hr m Shirred Ribbon, 6yrs, 7.5 (M. Billington) 3 Also started: 5 (5) Survoy 9.0, 1 (1) Happy Night 8.8, 8 (8) Owlsgleam 7.13, 3 (3) Drinkup 7.10, 7 (7) Almira 7.0. Drinkup and Almira were the first to show out and Rabble was next. Owlsgleam was second into the straight and Happy Night was seen coming up fast on the rail. Rabble went on to win by a length and a half from Roy Bun, with Happy Night a length back, third. Shirred Ribbon was fourth. Time, 1.25. E. A. Jones failed to weigh in after the race and third place was taken from Happy Night and given to Shirred Ribbon.

Raeburn, Short Circuit, Sunbeam, and Patuma were the first to get the right of way and there was little change tifl the straight was reached, when Haerepo showed up and finished strongly a length ahead of Lady Leigh, winch beat Short Circuit for second money by a neck. Raeburn was fourth. Time, 59 4-ssec.

MELROSE TROT HANDICAP, Of £120; second horse £l2 and third horse £8 from the stake. For ’ horses tlyit can do 3.43 or bettei. One Mile and a-half.

Passing the stand soon after the start the leaders were Pursuit, Attain and Resistance, and at the back these three were still in front from King s Jubilee and Francisco. The latter came up fn the straight and won comfortably by two lengths from Lombard, while Gay Lady was half a length away, third. Fourth place wag taken by Resistance.- Times, 3.22 1-5, 3.23 2-o, 3.24.

When the field had settled down Courtvard, Rebel Lad,, Queen of Song and Last Refrain were m front in that order and as they came round to the straight, Courtyard and Queen of bong were together, and The Surgeon was coming up fast, but faded away m the straight. Queen of Song won by two lengths from Rebel Lad, and halt a length back was Made Money, w ® Last Refrain was fourth. Time, L.o.
