BIRD FANCIERS

SOUTH ISLAND CONFERENCE. DISCUSSION ON THE REMITS, THE CONCLUDING SESSIONS. “That this conference make representations to the Ministers of Agriculture and Finance asking that the law be amended so that the Poultry Board be empowered to provide trophies and funds for utility breeds at South Island shows,” was a remit carried yesterday afternoon at the annual conference of the South Island Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Association. The support of the Poultry Board in this matter will also be sought. It was explained that tags had been placed on trophies of this nature which had been granted. Many questions of interest to bird fanciers were dealt with in the remits. The president (Mr G. H. Bradford) presided. The fact that some birds had been lost at the Ashburton Show this year was referred to by Mr R. H. Loy, in moving for the Ashburton Fanciers’ Society that it be a rule of the association that nobody could remove poultry from pens unless a written order were obtained from the secretary. The matter had not been settled yet, he said. Exhibitors would be given more confidence when sending birds to shows if the rule were adopted. The secretary (Mr R. Pearce) said he considered it was a question for each club. He thought that the birds were stolen from the Ashburton Show after tho show had been closed. “I could have taken birds from two of the largest shows in the South Island this year without consent,” remarked Mr G. H. Nicoll, of' Ashburton, who represented the Invercargill Club. The president said that the association had not the power to tell the clubs and societies what they should do in the matter, and suggested that clubs should have strong committees to supervise or give delivery of the birds. The motion, after being altered to read that clubs be recommended to adopt a rule making it compulsory for exhibitors to obtain a permit before removing exhibits, was adopted. The Dunediil Fanciers’ Club and Invercargill Poultry Club supported a remit, which was rejected, that the accepting of entries for association and federation shows be reciprocal. The North Canterbury Club forwarded a remit suggesting that the association endeavour to get permission to hold art unions in conjunction with shows. The Christchurch Poultry Club supported the remit, which was withdrawn when the president explained that 16 clubs and societies would be required to support the proposal to ensure its success, but only eight delegates at the conference had been instructed to do so.

“That the association provide plates, showing a good type of bird, in the various breeds,' to be hired out to clubs,” Avas moved by the Hakatere Poultry Club. The remit Avas not adopted. The president expressed the opinion that the provision of plates Avas a matter for the clubs avlio desired to make their shows more attractive.

“That the association donate four championship certificates for the Papanui egg-laying competition, one each for best light breed, best heavy breed) best duck, and best in eggs,” was moved by the Christchurch Poultry Club, and carried. The certificates Avill be issued this year. A standard of conditions for judging racing homer pigoens, submitted by the Blenheim Poultry Club, was discussed. The conference Avas of' the opinion that some standard for pigeon competitions Avas required, and the matter Avas referred to the council to arrange for homing pigeon clubs to compile a standard to be submitted to the next annual conference.
