UTILITIES TAX.
COURT OVER-RULES PLAN.
WASHINGTON, February! 1
A decision which may reflect the attitude of the Supremo Court to President Roosevelt’s contemplated regulations for the control of public utilities was given hy the Court to-day. By five judgments to four, it held that the tax of one-tenth of one per cent, on the gross income of public utilities, imposed by the State’ of Washington, was unconstitutional. The four so-called “Liberals” of the Bench, Justices Hughes, Stone, Brandeis and Cardoza, formed the minority.
The State had imposed the tax to defray the expenses of the Public Works Department, which regulates the Utilities.
