SPORTS ATTRACTIONS.
FIXTURES FOR TO-MORROW. The main interest in sports activities in Ashburton to-morrow will centre around the representative hockey matches between Ashburton and, Canterbury. The visiting teams will include two men’s Learns, a primary schoolboys’ team and a women’s team, the 'latter playing against Ashburton B, as the senior team will still he absent at the New Zealand tournament at Blenheim. The men’s representative team has given a good account of itself in recent matches, particularly when
it won the Quatre-Bras Cup on Saturday last, and the matches with the provincial side should be interesting. The annual basketball seven-a-side tournament will be played, and here again play will be interesting. A novel feature will be the old-time basketball contest. Playing in the dress and with the apparatus used in the first days or basketball, those taking part should attract considerable attention and cause some amusement. For instance, the baskets from which the game derived its name will be used for goalthrowing. Once the ball lands in the basket it is necevssary for the receptacle to be turned upside down to get it out again. The Ashburton Rugby representative team will travel to Oamaru to play its annual match against the North Otago Union. Rugby matches to be played at the Showgrounds include a junior trial game between probables and possibles, and the final round of the third grade competition. The two leading teams, Old Boys and Technical Old Boys, will be seen in action at the Showgrounds. A Stableford bogey match will be played, by the Ashburton Golf Club.
