OBITUARY.

MRS MARY WALSH. The death occurred, recently at her residence, 37 West Street, of Mrs Mary Walsh, aged 79, who had been a resident of Ashburton for 56 years. Born at Auckland, Mrs Walsh was educated with a view to taking up teaching, and she came to Ashburton from Auckland to fill a position on the staff of the first Catholic School here. She remained on the staff till she married Mr John Walsh, an orchardist, who died some years ago. During war time, Mrs Walsh took a very active part in the work of the Red Cross and other patriotic organisations and she was for some years a prominent member of the Plunket Society. Of late years, Mrs Walsh had been of a .very retiring disposition. She leaves three daughters (Mrs A. Fitzgerald, Miss K. M. Walsh, Miss I. M. Walsh) and one son (Mr E. Walsh), all residing in Ashburton. MRS GEORGE MURDOCH. The death occurred at Hanmer of Mrs George Murdoch, formerly of Mayfield, aged 73 years. Mrs Murdoch was born at Belfast, Ireland, and arrived in New Zealand by the' sailing ship Kaikoura in 1836, with her brother William, who died 2£ years ago. She came to Wakanui and married Mr George Murdoch, who had a farm at Lauriston, in 1889, and they resided there until 1902. Air and Airs Alurdoch the'u shifted to Alayfield, where Air Alurdoch had purchased the Alayfield Estate, of 4600 acres.

Airs Alurdoch is survived by a family of eight—Mrs S. Austin (Dunedin), Alessrs G. B. Alurdoch, Janie’s D. Alurdoch, A. Alurdoch, G J. Alurdoch, Joseph D. Alurdoch, N. S- Alurdoch and L. Alurdoch, all of Alayfield. Airs Alurdoch was a staunch supporter of the Presbyterian Church and was well known in the district for her many acts of kindness and hospitality. The funeral took place at Ashburton, the Rev. A. D. Kirkland and the Rev. R. S. Watson officiating at the graveside. All the sons were bearers, and there was a large funeral. MR J. A. H. CATTON.
