Mr H, E. Herring, M.P., returned to Ashburton from Wellington this morning.
The Rev. E. T. Jones, of Greendale, will preach at the Ashburton Baptist Church to-morrow.
The appointment of Mr R. W. Allard as a, member of the Alford Forest School Committee, vice Mr G. Durran, was approved by the Canterbury Education Board, yesterday.
Mr C. E. Moller will leave this evening for Wellington, where he will attend the annual conference of the New Zealand Dental Association, which will occupy the whole of next week.
Mr D. R. Gordon, a member of the staff of the Ashburton Technical High School, left last evening for Auckland to attend the vocational conference for engineering instructors conducted by the New Zealand Technical School Teachers’ Association from August 25 to 28.
Mrs E. N. Erickson, of the staff of the Ashburton Borough School, who has been appointed head teacher at Ngapara School, Otago, was farewelled .by the staff and pupils yesterday. The headmaster (Mr H. Colquhoun) presented her with a handbag from the staff, and the head, prefect (Winnie Buchanan) made a presentation of an oak dinner waggon and cups and saucers from the pupils.
Miss K. W. Hewscn, who has been in charge of the Hilton (Geraldine) School for the last nine years, and who has been transferred to the Ashburton East School, was farewelled by a large attendance of residents in the district yesterday. Many speakers paid tributes to Miss Hewson’s work at the Hilton School, and presentations were made to her on behalf of the School Committee and children.
Miss J. E. Dunbier and Miss E. Sandrey, of the staff of the Allenton School, -who have been transferred to the Woolston School, were farewelled yesterday. Presentations of a rug to Miss Dunbier, on behalf of the committee, staff and children, and a powder bowl to Miss Sandrey, on behalf of the children of Standards 111. and IV., were made by the headmaster (Mr E. S. Chambers). The chairman of the School Committee (Mr E. CL Bathurst), and Archdeacon A, J. Petrie, wished the teachers success in their new sphere.
At the meeting of the Canterbury Education Board yesterday, the following appointments were made:—Allenton, Miss D. E. Knox; Fairlie District High School, Mr C. H. T. Miller. The following resignations were accepted:—Allenton, Miss J. E. Dunbier (Woclston); Anama, Miss M. C. Farrell (Southland); Ashburton, Mrs E. N. Erickson (Ngapara); Ashburton East, Miss N. M. Tayler (Linwood Avenue) and Mr R. L. Matthews (Chaslands); Flemington, Mr C. H. Miller (Fairlie); Methven District High School, Miss E. S. Smith and Miss M. Cradock (Mangamaunu).
