TAXATION SYSTEM
TRANSFORMATION INTENDED. COMPREHENSIVE CHANGES NEXT YEAR.. PRELIMINARY STEP THIS SESSION (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Discussing taxation, the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) said to-day that it was intended to transform the whole system. The position was being thoroughly examined with a view to comprehensive changes next year. While some changes would he introduced this year, they would be only in the nature of a preliminary step to lead up to what will inevitably follow. The tendency in late years had been toward indirect rather than direct forms of taxation. That was what the Government would alter. The Prime Minister reiterated that the Government would not restore the cuts in interest.
