WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.

DOMINION CONFERENCE OPENS. (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, July 28. Nearly 500 delegates wall attend 1 the conference of the’ Women’s Institutes of the (Dominion, which will he officially open eel by the Minister of Education (the Hon. P. Fraser), to-morrow morning. The delegates will represent the majority of the 890 institutes in New Zealand, which have a membership of 40,000. As there will he 600 visitors to the conference, apart from the delegates, the attendance at most of the sessions will he more than 1000. Approximately 450 of the visitors arrived by special train from the north this afternoon. The delegates, whoso deliberations will extend over three days, were informally' welcomed in the concert chamber of the Town Hall to-night by the Otago Federation. Alter the official opening to-morrow morning, the conference will continue with routine business, and, in the evening a, reception will (he tendered by the Mayor. Most of the remits will deal with questions concerned with the administration of the institutes, and will he considered in private, but in the later stage resolutions urging Government action on matters of health and other questions of public interest will he considered. In the absence of the president (Mrs H. Paterson, 1 of Pahiatua), wiho is abroad, Mrs W. Deans (North Canterbury), and Miss A. Kane (Wellington) will act as chairwomen.

THE EDUCATION 1 POLICY.

CONVEYANCE AND BOARDING. DUNEDIN, This Day. Over 1000 women assembled in the Town Hhll this morning for the opening of the annual Conference of the Dominon Federation of Women’s Institutes. There were 500 delegates, representing 890 institutes, and over--500 visitors. The conference, which will continue three days, was opened by the Hon. P. Fraser (Minister of Education), who gave a review of the Government’s educational programme. He said he hoped that next year the Government would lay the foundation of a national health scheme for town and country alike. It was desirous to extend dental treatment of school children to every corner of tho Dominion. This scheme involved a great deal of pfanning and meant training 100 nurses every year. The conveyance of children to post-primary schools had been fully discussed, and it was hoped to announce that such a project was under way with, some form of hoarding allowances.
