THE WEATHER.

STEADY RAIN AND COLD CONDITIONS. Rain which began to fall in Ashburton yesterday morning continued today without a break. The fall up to 9 o’clock this morning was 74 points. Cold, temperatures accompanied the rain, the maximum reading of 41 degrees yesterday being the lowest this winter. The inside minimum last night was 36.2 degrees. The temperature was cold again to-day, with a southwesterly wind blowing. Barometric pressure at 9 o’clock this morning was 29. 55 inches, a fall from 29.77 inches yesterday morning.

The Government Meteorologist, at noon to-day, issued the following statement regarding tiie weather: General inference: An extensive and complex depression covers the New Zealand area, but is moving eastward. Pressure, is rising over Eastern Australia.

The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oamaru is as follows:

Light to: moderate but increasing south-easterly to southerly winds. Weather dull and mistv with further rain, some heavy falls probajble and snow on high levels. Temperatures becoming cold. Seas rough north of Kaikoura. elsewhere moderate, but increasing.
