The Oam aru Presbytery yesterday sustained, a call from the WestonT'otara congregation to the Rev. H. H. Barton, cf Lawrence (says a Press Association message). The Rev. H. H. Barton is a brother of Mr H. C. Barton, of Carew.
Mrs O. G. Vial, of Ashburton, has been appointed judge of the national and fancy dancing sections of the national * dancing competitions in Christchurch on August 17, 19, 20 and 22.
At a meeting of the Ashburton Rugby Referees’ Association last evening motions of sympathy with Mr J. Macmillan in the death of his mother and with Mr E. S. Chambers in the death of his father-in-law were carried in silence.
A Press Association telegram from Blenheim states that Mr Justice Ostler spent the week-end at Te Awaite whaling station, Tory Channel, and had the satisfaction of taking part in the capture of a whale in Cook Strait. His Honor was an interested, spectator of the whole process of capture and the treatment of the carcase.
Mr A. C'. Shaw, who has been stock agent and auctioneer for Pvne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., Ashburton, for 11 years, and who has been transferred on promotion to the Timaru branch, was entertained at afternoon tea by the staff yesterday. He was presented with a gold-mounted fountain pen by the manager (Mr H. H. Parsons).
Mr Ernest Henry Walton Rowntree, M.A. (Principal of the Wanganui Intermediate School) lias been appointed headmaster of the Gore High School, vice Mr Joseph Hunter, M.A., rector for the past 26 years, who is retiring on superannuation. There were 40 applications for the position from all parts of New Zealand (says a Press Association telegram).
