THE DRIVING OF TEST PILES. AT RANG IT AT A BRIDGE SITE. The driving of the test piles on the site of the proposed traffic bridge over the Rangitata River will be completed in about two weeks. Tho work which commenced three months ago, was to secure data, on which to base the calculations of the designers of the bridge. It was thought that the boulder formation of tiie river bed might preclude tho use of concrete piles, and for this reason the test piles were driven. There are at present two temporary bridges across the south branch of the river.
The deviation, of which the bridge will form part, covers about 15 miles of 'new highway and when the project was first announced by the Main Highways Board, it was stated that the total* cost for roads, bridges, and paving would, be between £60,000 and £70,000.
