PACIFIC AIR LINE.
SURVEY OF THE ROUTE EXPEDITION TO BASE ISLANDS (United Press Association—Copyright.) HONOLULU, Jan. 9. The coastguard cutter Itasca sailed to-day, taking relief crews for the aviation observation stations on Baker, Jarvis, and Howland Islands, under the direction of Mr W. T. Miller, chief of the- Air Navigation Department of the United States Commerce Department. Aboard the cutter are nine Hawaiian youths who will replace the men at present on the islands, and also Lieutenant E. W. Stephens, navy aerologist, to study the islands and make observations.
The Itasca will probably visit Kingman Samoa to determine the value of the islands as beacon stations and landing bases on the proposed air route to New Zealand.
The expedition, led by Dr. Dara Coman, returned on Tuesday. It had surveyed and mapped islands, and brought specimens of soil and animal and plant life in the schooner Kinkajou.
