SWIMMING.
EXCUSES FOR FAILURE. (Received This Day, 11.5 a.rn.) SYDNEY, This Day. Commenting on the . swimming matches last night at Drummoyne Baths, the “Telegraph” says there was an excuse for Jarvis, who was last in the 220 yards championship of New South Wales. He drew number one lane* which is the worst of the pool. He dropped behind slightly to conserve his energy, and so got all the “wash” from the other competitors. Mathieson, in the back-stroke handicap race, in which he was second, was clocked at one-fifth of a second outside V. Besomo’s Australian record of 64 4-ssecs.
