A wooden hatch coyer washed ashore at Lake Tyers yesterday has been identified by four of the Chinese crew of the Vincas as having come from the Paringa, which disappeared in a storm while towing the Vincas. DENIAL OF UNDERMANNING. SYDNEY, January 8. The Assistant-Minister of Commerce (Senator Brennan), commenting on Mr Kirby’s statement, says that all the requirements of the Commonwealth navigation laws were complied with by the owners of the Paringa, which was not undermanned. The Paringa carried a complement of four more than was necessary. A Hong Kong message stated that Mr W. E. Kirby (secretary of the China Coast Officers’ Guild), interviewed, said the total certificated complement of the Paringa consisted of three British ranks and two Chinese holding “service” certificates issued by the Government of Hong Kong, while the Vincas, which it was towing, did not carry any certificated men. A Rabaul message says' that the first definite result from the search for the New' Guinea Administration’s schooner Hermes, which lias been missing since the end of Nbvember with three whites and 17 natives aboard, was obtained when the steamer Friderun returned to Rabaul with the top of a table which was found on ITnea Island. The Administrator of New Guinea said there was no doubt that the table top was one that was secured to the superstructure of the Hermes.
