The situation in North China is again critical as a result of the Japanese demand presented to Sung Cheli Yuan (chairman of the Hopei Chahar Council) for the arrest of 50 Chinese soldiers Avho allegedly ransacked a Japanese store and hauled down the Japanese flag at Taku,„and the dismissal of the commander of the Chinese troops and other officials in Taku; also the payment of compensation and a cessation of anti-Japanese activities, Avitli a guarantee that there Avill be no recurrence.
Chinese circles fear that further demands will follow a shooting affray between Chinese and Japanese soldiers near one of the gates of Peiping.
