LABOUR DEPARTMENT.

"DEAD AS JULIUS CAESAR." (Per Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 6. The statement that he had arrived at the conclusion that the Labour Department was "as dead as Julius Caesar" was made by tho Minister of Labour (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong), when replying to a deputation from the Christehurch Women's Unemployment Committee which waited on him this morning in his capacity as Minister of Employment. Members of the deputation made complaints of interference with their activities on the part of certain officials of the Labour Department, and the Minister remarked that he was pleased to note that there was some activitv in the department. Mr * Armstrong said his experience with the Labour Department was different. He had been going into the question of the inspection of shops and offices and factories under the Shops and Offices Act and the Factories Act and other legislation, with a view to bringing about an improvement, and he had arrived at the conclusion that the Labour Department was as dead as Julius Caesar. What the deputation had stated indicated that the department at least had some life in it.
