RAID ON A CLUB.
TWENTY-SEVEN MEN FINED. (l"er Press Association). WELLINGTON, January 6. The remainder of the men arrested in the raid on the New Century Club on Saturday were dealt with by Mr J. H. Luxford, S.M., to-day. The keeper of the club,,John Duncan, aged 31, a salesman, was fined £25. Andrew Lamb, aged 35, a labourer, and John Ruben Dobson, aged 36, a wharf labourer, were each fined £lO for assisting to conduct the establishment. The men ivere allowed a month in which to pay. The 24 men remanded from Saturday on a charge of being on the premises were each fined £2, to be paid within 14 days. Duncan said he took over the club on December 27 from the previous owner, who used'it solely for playing cards. The price agreed upon was £BO, of which he paid £4O in cash. Lamb at no time received any payment from the club for his services, and Dobson received no fixed wage, his receipts depending upon the generosity of the members. The business conducted was very small, and had the raid been carried out on any night except Friday or Saturday only a handful of members would have been found. At no time had the nightly attendance exceeded 15.
