TRAGEDY IN SYDNEY

(United Press Association--Copyright) SYDNEY, January 5.

A revolver duel between the police and a man who. was suspected of having shot and critically wounded Constable John Terbutt near the central railway station on New Year's Day took place in a house in the suburb of Waterloo to-day. The suspect, James Penrose, aged 18 x is known to the police as "the boy gunman." Realising that resistance was futile he shot himself dead through the temple.

A police cordon was thrown round the house where Penrose was hiding. He was the leader of a gang of hooligans, and had confided to his associates that he would not be taken alive. When the detectives burst into the house Penrose opened fire, and a detective replied, both shots missing. Then, before there could be any further exchange of shots, Penrose turned his revolver on himself.
