FINED FOR ASSAULT.
IMPRISONED FOR THEFT. (Per Press Association.) WHAKATANE, January 2. In the Magistrate’s Court this morning, Kennedy Lawson, a Maori, was fined £lO or two months’ imprisonment with hard labour, for assaulting a nightwatchman in the early hours of New Year’s morning, and £2O or three months’ imprisonment lor the theft of the nightwatchman’s electric torch. The police described the assault as particularly brutal, and parallel to an assault on the police. The nightwatchman advised accused to leave the town, and without provocation accused twice assaulted the nightwatchman, attempting throttling tactics.
