THE HEALTH CAMP
MONTH'S STAY AT STAYELEY. LOCATION IN THE LOCAL HALL. CHILDREN ASSEMBLE TO-MORROW. A new departure as far as the -Ashburton County is concerned is the Children’s Health Camp at Staveley, which will commence to-morrow. Similar camps have been arranged this year m many parts of New Zealand, but the Ashburton Camp has received no outside assistance, and all the money ioi conducting it has been raised in the County. A committee to arrange for the camp was formed some months ago, and its work has been performed by an energetic executive. The sale of health stamps has been the main source of revenue, and an amount has been raised sufficient to carry on the camp in a satisfactory manner. The advance party to the camp, consisting of Sister M. I. Cox, of the Division of School Hygiene of the Department of Health, two prefects (Miss 0. Bathurst, Ashburton, and Miss R. Chisnall, Eiffelton), with the camp cook, left to-day to make preliminary arrangements. They will be met at the camp by two prefects from Staveley and the camp caretaker. The camp, which will continue for a month, is to be held in the Staveley Hall. All camp equipment is being taken up to-day, and the water supply is being laid on, while heating and cooking arrangements are being made. Extra conveniences have been erected. Twenty-four children will be in camp, 12 being drawn from schools in the Borough and Allenton, two, each from the ltakaia, Lismore and Tinwald Schools, and one each from Carew, Baling, Hinds, Cliertsey, Methven and Barr Hill. They were chosen after medical examination from a large number of applicants. When the children go to Staveley to-morrow afternoon in charge of the camp mother (Mrs H. J. Constable) it is hoped to have all arrangements in readiness for them. The children will ho weighed and charted, and at the end of the month comparisons will be made to ascertain improvements in their weight and condition. Further offers of voluntary assistance have been received by the camp executive. Porter’s Motors have offered to convey the children to the camp, Burnett’s Motors to carry all camp equipment, and Nell’s Motors to take bread to the camp as it is required.
