M.C.C. V. SOUTH CANTERBURY. VISITORS OUT FOR 182 RUNS. TIMARU, December 27. The Marylebone Cricket Club tourists opened their match against South Canterbury at Fraser Park to-day and delighted a large gathering with a sparkling batting display, scoring 182 runs in 141 minutes, the total including two sixes and 18 fours. It was a refreshing afternoon’s cricket, the heat being tempered by a cool easterly breeze. The grandstand was well filled and there were many who watched the progress of the match from the banks. The wicket was slightly tricky, and was inclined to favour the bowlers when the visitors, who Avon the toss, decided to bat. After the first hour, hoAvever, it improved, and by the time it had been rolled at the end of the visitors’ innings, it Avas fast and true. The match had a rather sensational opening Avhen R. Reynolds, the Temuka fast boAvler, avlio opened the attack from the northern end, completely beat D. Smith, the Derbyshire professional, and a brilliant left-hander, Avith the fourth ball of the day. The croAvd received another thrill Avhen E. Lee replaced Reynolds, and Avith his first ball dismissed W, Barber, the Yorkshire captain, IbAV. The first three wickets fell cheaply but J. IF Human, the Middlesex batsman, and E. R. T. Holmes, the visiting captain, scored speedily, and provided a display of forceful hitting. Holmes Avas magnificent in his off-driving and there Avere many bursts of applause as he frequently found the boundary fences. His total of 61, Avhich included eight fours, AA r as made in 62 minutes. James Langridge, the Sussex professional, Avas another batsman avlio pleased. He Avas aggressive at the start, and Avas the only batsman to

score a six, lifting the howlers brilliantly on two occasions. He gave a splendid exhibition and .scored 49 in 86 minutes. He was rather unfortunate in being dismissed by a spectacular catch which V. Hahn had to jump for on the long-on boundary. After Langridge left, the scoring slowed up considerably' and except for S. C. Griffith, the Cambridge University wicket-keeper, the remaining batsmen did not enter double figures the innings closing at 4.50 for 182. O. F. W. Allcott ably handled the South Canterbury attack, which at no stage could be treated lightly. J. A. Kane, who was making his third appearance before Marylebone Cricket (Hub teams, bowled 15.3 overs and provided a sensational climax to . the Englishmen’s innings when he captured the last two wickets with successive balls. Allcott was always treated with respect and at times his form was reminiscent of his best performances, when he bowled with distinction for New Zealand. The brunt of the attack fell on him. He sent down 19 overs unchanged and took three wickets for 38 runs. At stumps South Canterbury had lost three wickets for 48 runs. H. D. Read getting all three wickets. Scores:—? WELLINGTON, December 27. Erratic batting by Wellington should have enabled Canterbury To gam a promising position in. the first day or the Plunket Shield match at the Basifc Reserve to-day. However, Cau-er-feury’s batting slumped as well, and Wellington received a first innings k After M. A. O’Brien (Hawke’s Bay) and D. A. R, Moloney (Manawatu)l had put on 56 for the first wicket for Wellington, the hatting weakened before the slow bowling of Canterbury. W. E. Merritt, a former New Zealand representative slow bowler, secured five wickets for 72 runs, and I. B. Cro-mb took four for 53. The visiting bowling was well managed and the field was carefully placed, being varied according to the style of each batsman. C. Jackman, the wicketkeeper, dismissed five batsmen. Against steady bowling, well supported in the field, Canterbury never settled down, the whole side feeing out in a little more than two hours for 122, 74 behind Wellington. E. D. Blundell bowled especially.well, taking three wickets for 2.9 runs, and C. Parsloe had three for 35. Wellington has lost one wicket .for 18 runs in the second innings. MARGIN OF 292 RUNS. AUCKLAND, December 27. The Plunket Shield cricket match between Auckland and Otago was concluded to-day, Auckland winning outright by 292 runs. Auckland scored 303 and 376 for seven -wickets, declared, and Otago 241 and 146. At the conclusion of the third day’s play, Otago in its second innings had lost one wicket for 37. Two and three-quarter hours were sufficient to-day to decide the issue, the last nine wickets adding only 109 runs. Conditions were again ideal, but the spin bowlers gained little assistance

from the wearing wicket. Nevertheless, the Otago batting was extremely disappointing. The batsmen showed little enterprise, and were content mostly to play the “rock.” This made the play very dull, and had the batsmen attacked the bowlers with judgment, there was every likelihood of Otago's making more runs. Saxton, who opened the innings, again showed solid defence in compiling'top score with 33. He batted for 114 minutes, and hit two fours. Scores:— * AUCKLAND. First Innings .. .. ..
