THE SUMMER MEETING. ROI L’OR WINS HANDICAP. . STAKES TO FRISCO LADY. There was a very large attendance at the Ashburton racecourse to-day, when the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting was held. The weather was unusually hot, but this meeting each year is looked upon as the gala event of the holiday season in Canterbury, and all roads in. the province seemed to lead to the course. Two special trains from Christchurch arrived with every seat taken up and many people standing. ' The track was in excellent order and was very fast. The fields were all large, and the horses taking part were all of good class. Win and place machines were working in the totalisator house. The club had made the best of arrangements, and the meeting went through smoothly. The Ashburton Silver Band, under Mr E. R. Hopwood, was in attendance, and added much to the enjoyment of the day. Results up to the time the “Guardian” went to press were as follow: — MITCHAM HANDICAP, (Harness), of 125 sovs; second horse 20 sovs and third horse 10 sovs from the stake. Class 3.49 or better. Bonnie Here was first past- the stand after the start, and next came Cracksman, and these two kept in front till the far turn was reached, when Bonnie Rere broke badly and was out of the contest. At length intervals the leaders then were Cracksman, Bon Chance, Royal Romance and Royal Parrish, well out in front of the rest of the field. There were one or two changes in the straight, and Cracksman got- home by four lengths from Royal Romance, which was close up but broke in front of the stand. Three lengths back was Bon Chance, and fourth place was taken by Royal Parrish. Times —3.29 4*5, 3.28, 3.28 3-5. Heather Queen, Colleen Wrack and Our War were first past the stand, and at the back Colleen Wrack had a lead of about six lengths from Our War and Ace iPot. At the turn to the straight Blair Athol was seen to have come up to a handy position, and this contender went on to wan lyy four lengths from Zest, which was three lengths ahead of Ace Pot, while Our War was fourth. Blue Mountain and Sir Guy broke a hit at the starj;, and the order in the leading division was Wrecker, Wild Guy, Wladder, Evicus and Sunny Morn. At the stand the order was Blue Mountain, Sunny Morn, Evicus, Wrecker, Wraclder, Wild Guy and Roi l’Or. Along the hack Roi l r or went ii|) beside Wild Guy, and the order at the opening to the straight was Blue Mountain, Evicus and Sunny Morn together, Wrecker and Wraclder together, Roi l’Or and Wild Guy. Roi I’Or, under the whip, Avon hy half a length, from Evicus, while Wrecker Avas third, a length hack. Blue Mountain was fourth. Times—4.ls 4-5, 4.20, 4.21 1-5. The win Avas a most popular one, and horse and driver were given an ovation as they came back to the bird-cage, Avhile the. cheering Avas prolonged when the cup Avas presented. NEW ZEALAND CHAMPION STAKES, (Harness), of 600 sovs; first horse 375 sovs, second 125 sovs, third 70 sovs, and fourth 30 sovs. For three—year-olds. Rank, Gaillard, Chili Bean and Pot Luck. Casanova went up fast going out of tlie straight. Along the back Double Great was leading from Pot Luck, Frisco Lady and Maltravers. At the far turn Casanova moved up, and Frisco Lady had taken a good position. Pot Luck headed Double (Treat at this point, and Casanova was dropping back. At the entrance to the straight the order 'was Pot Luck, Frisco Lady, Double Great, Casanova, Gaillard and Maltravers. Frisco Lady went on to win by three lengths from ll’ot Luck, while Double Great was a similar distance back, third. Gaillard was fourth. Times —3.214, 3.22, 3.22 2-5. MIDSUMMER HANDICAP, (Harness), of 150 sovs • second horse 30 sovs, and third horse 15 sovs from "the stake. For horses'that can do 3.39 or better. One mile and a-half. 1 (1) —Mr J. It. After the dust had cleared away following a bad smash at the end of the straight, there was not much of a race. Cream Harvester led. past the stand, and then fell, bringing down Sky Wink, Wheat Pool, Plutus and Oversight. Gallant Knight went out to the front from Trireme, Shadow Queen, Lady Hannah and Royal Crescent. Gallant Knight led into the straight from Shadow , Queen, both horses being well out in front from Lady Hannah and Trireme. Gallant Knight won by two lengths from Shadow Queen, while Lady Hannali was third, three lengths back. Trireme was fouytk. Times —3.21, 3.22, 3.23 2-5. All the drivers in the smash were injured, but they were able to walk off the course. The mix-up was a most spectacular one, sulkies, men and horses being thrown into a struggling mass.
