JAPANESE DENY ULTIMATUM. CHINESE EXODUS FROM CHAPEI. United Press Association—Copyright) SHANGHAI, November 11. The tension caused by the murder of a Japanese marine, Hideo Makayama, allegedly by a Chinese civilian, is now slightly easier. The Japanese naval authorities deny presenting an ultimatum to the Chinese, and say that they merely sought full information. They deplore the mass exodus of Chinese from Chapei (which was severely bombed in 1932), to the International Settlement. They say that this was due to baseless rumours, but they fail to disclose that these were spread by a Japanese newspaper. • _ A representative of the General Stan of the Japanese Expeditionary Corps visited the Mayor of Shanghai. The Mayor said that the measures which had been taken in the investigations by the Chinese authorities had had no results The Japanese gunboat Otaka is being sent from Tokio to Shanghai.
