STEADY RAIN THIS AFTERNOON.

AVELCOME CHANGE EXPERIENCED.

The north-westerly conditions prevailing this morning gave place to steady rain in Ashburton this afternoon. When the wind swung to the south about 11.30 there was a strong gale for a brief period, and rain came on about 1.30 p.m. The fall, although necessitating the postponement of a number of sports fixtures arranged for this afternoon, is generally welcome. The country has been parched by the continued -dry winds, and the refreshment of to-day’s fall will be very beneficial.

The barometric pressure this morning was 20.55 inches, compared with 29.83 inches. Extreme temperatures in the last 24 hours were 69.6 degrees and 44.6 degrees, while those on Thursday were 64.6 degrees and 38.2 degrees. There was a frost of one degree yesterday morning.

TO-DAY’S FORECAST. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Government Meteorologist, at noon to-day, issued the following statement regarding the weather:— General inference: A depression is crossing the Dominion to-day, while an anti-cyclone is advancing from the western Tasman Sea. The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oamaru is as follows: — Strong southerly winds of gale force in places. ..Weather cold, squally with rain, and on ranges snow; hail likely on parts of coastal areas. Seas rough.
