He stated that many people had approached him in regard to his standing for Mid-Canter-bury. Mr Nicoll was in Christchurch to-day and his decision in regard to requests that have been made to him to stand for nomination in the National interests could not be ascertained, though it is understood that finality in regard to the party’s candidate will be reached at a meeting in- Ashburton this week. v

MR H. E. HERRING TO STAND.

NATIONAL EXECUTIVE'S CHOICE.

The selection of Mr Horace E. Herring, of Ashburton, as the official Labour candidate for the Mid-Canter-bury seat at the general election next month was made by the national executive of the New Zealand Labour Party in Wellington on Saturday. A week ago Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., met members of the Ashburton branch of the party, and stated that the Rev. J. K. Archer, of Christchurch, had been nominated by the national executive as a candidate, making four from whom the executive would make its choice. The three Ashburton nominees, Messrs ’Herring, R. W. Wightman and J. J. Phaup, addressed the meeting, aijfi Mr Sullivan stated that ho had been very much impressed by Mr Herring’s remarks. This, no doubt, carried weight with the executive in choosing Mr Herring as the official candidate.

Mr Herring is an Associate member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers, and chartered and registered engineer (London and New Zealand). He served his apprenticeship with a shipbuilding firm in London, and came to the Dominion in 1909. He has spent many years as engineering lecturer and demonstrator in technical education, and for the last eight years has been instructor in charge of the engineering section of the Ashburton Technical High School.
