FAMINE FEARED

WHEAT IN UNITED STATES.

POSSIBLE WAR AND DROUGHT,

(United Press Association—Copyright)

NEW YORK, September 24. A message from Topeka (Kansas) states that Mr E. J. Smiley (secretary of the Kansas Grain Dealers’ Association) issued a warning that a grain famine threatened the United States. If there was another drought in the great wheat belt, and war broke out in Europe, he hated to think what might happen. He said American farmers should he urged to increase their wheat acreage rather than reduce it, so that the nation could get back on to a selfsufficient basis. He believed that the United States would be forced to import at least 75,000,000 bushels between now and the next harvest, for domestic needs.
