SAFE STOLEN
FOUND ON THE HILLS.
THIEVES’ STRENUOUS EFFORTS.
(Special to the “Guardian.”) CHRISTCHURCH, September 21
A safe, stolen from the office of Wise Brothers, Ltd., furniture and cabinetmakers, of Moorhouse Avenue, last night, was found this morning on Dyers Pass Road, forced open. It contained only unsigned cheques and books, so that the thieves received no reward for a good deal of hard work. After stealing the safe, the thieves took it up nearly to the Sign of the Kiwi. Breaking into a tool-box of one of the relief gangs working on tho hills, they took a sledge hammer and smashed the back of the safe.
Entrance to the premises in Moorhouse Avenue was gained by forcing the door, which is in the side of the building. Apparently a car was taken into the yard to pick up the safe, as a gate was also forced open. The safe measured approximately two feet six by two fret by two feet, and would require two men tc move it. Yesterday afternoon the factory was locked at 5 o'clock, and the theft was not discovered until 7.30 this morning. The safe was found at 9.30.
