THE ASHBURTON FESTIVAL.
LAST EVENING’S PROGRAMME.
THIRTEEN CLASSES DECIDED. The Ashburton Competitions Society’s festival was continued in tl e Majestic Theatre last evening, when there was again a large attendance of patrons. The programme was a very good one, and was pleasantly varied. The performers were warmly received and the standard of work was good, most of the competitors being those who had been recalled during the day sessions. Results were announced as tollow, competitors being resident m Ashburton unless otherwise stated:— Vocal Section. SOLO, Opera, ladies. Own selection. Miss Gwynetli Hughes (Orari) 33pts 1 Miss Marie Campbell (Timaru) 81pts 2 The nidge said this was a rather weak class. Both the placed competitors had excellent voices, but they had not yet learned how to sing opera. He said that singers should! make more o. tone colouring than had apparently been the case, and they might take note of the elocutionists, especially the younger perfermers, in this regard. He instanced the work of Miss Daphne Bishop as inn example.

The judge’said there had been some quite good songs in this class, but most of them suffered from being dull. Elocution Section. DIALOGUE (costume optional), under IG. (Two sections.) Commenting on this class, the judge stated that the winners hap a good stage setting and they had made a good climax, which was the most important thing.
