FOOTBALL.

THE ASHBURTON UNION.

SEVEN-A-SIDE TOURN AM ENT

The management, committee ol the Ashburton Rugby Union met last evening, the president (Mr <L C. C. MoLachlan) presiding. Mr F. Kennedy (manager) reported on the senior fixture, Ashburton v. Ellesmere, on Saturday, in which the home team won by 35 to 9. The Ashburton forwards were too heavy, the backs displayed good combination, and the team as a whole gave one of its best exhibitions this season, he said. It was decided to write and ask J. O’Connor (Rakaia) why he did not appear to take part in the fixture. The manager (Mr D. McDonald) reported that the Ashburton juniors were superior to the Ellesmere team in both departments of the match, and won by 19 points to 6. The game was not particularly spectacular, the forwards keeping the ball in too close in the second spell. The forwards all played solidly, and the backs, although lacking that cohesion which only comes with constant play together, made a good showing. The New Zealand Union forwarded £8 13s 6d as the Union’s share of broadcasting fees.
