ASHBURTON EAST
MEETING OF SCHOOL COMMITTEE The Ashburton East School Committee met last evening, when there were present Messrs AV. &. Kerr (chairman), J. Cook, AV. J. Miller, E. H. Childs, C. G. Dellow, H. AV. Sherratt, AV. H. Robinson and H. Money.
It was decided to send a letter of sympathy to Mrs Stigley, the mother of Douglas Fearn, a pupil of the school, who died recently. On the motion of Messrs Childs and Miller, it was agreed to apply to the Canterbury Education Board to have the school and schoolhouse renovated and painted. For the visiting committee, Messrs Cook and Dellow reported that all minor repairs had been effected, The headmaster (Mi* S. G. Macfarlane) reported that the attendances for the last five weeks were 392, 415, 404, 417 and 404 and the roll number had remained steady at 441. Inspectors had visited the school and the midyear’s examinations had been completed. Basketball and football were in full swing, the school being very successful in the latter. Pupils had been invited to attend the Arbor Day celebrations on August 7. Messrs Groves and Dellow were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month.
