COSTUMES AT CINEMA BALL.

ALLENTON CARNIVAL FUNCTION.

There was a Hollywood atmosphere in the Orange Hall last evening, when a cinema ball was held in aid of the Western Queen in the Allenton swimming bath carnival. Although there were not many patrons in fancy costume, a number of particularly good impersonations of well-known film stars were given. Such a function is novel to Ashburton.

The costumes were judged by Mrs J. Russel Wells and Mr A. R, Gordon (manager of the Majestic Theatre), and prizes were awarded 1 as follow: Best lady, Miss Joyce Chambers, as Norma Shearer in “The Barretts of Wimpole Btreet”; best man, Mr H. J. Saxton, as Lon Chaney • best pair, Misses Mai Willers and Mona Tait, as Mickie and Minnie Mouse; best set, Miss L. MoyJan, Mrs F. W. Chambers, Messrs J. Reeves, G. Wilson and N. Thomson, as “Our Gang.” Music was supplied by Dabourn’s orchestra, and Mr R. Flatman played extras. Mr Dingwall was M.C.

Cinema characters were as follow: Miss Joyce Chambers, Norma Shearer; Mrs G. Hosken, Dutch Peasant; Miss Margery MoyJan, Shirley Temple; Miss Olga Bathurst, Madame du Barry; Miss Mae Willers, Minnie Mouse; Miss Mona Tait, Mickie Mouse; Miss Joan Eaden, “Alice in Wonderland”; Mr G. Knox, Charlie Chaplin; Mr R. Flatman, Harold Lloyd; Mr J. Reeves, Miss r L. Moylan, Mr G. Wilson, Mr N. Thomson and Mrs F. W. Chambers, “Our Gang”: Messrs F. Frew and F. Mr E. C. Bathurst (chairman of the School Committee) thanked patrons for their .support, and expressed appreciation of the assistance of the judges.

MAJESTIC THEATRE. Concealing his true identity from all except lex Murdock, a wistful old deputy-sheriff, Larry Sutton arrives in the “ghost” mining towin to investigate strange doings about the Ballard radium mine. Adolph Borg, the caretaker, has been murdered in the stamping mill of the mine; Jack Parsons, Larry’s brother-in-law, has disappeared arid is suspected of having murdered Borg; and old Mr Ballard, an invalid, has summoned his nieces and nephews to share in his fortune before he dies. This is the opening of the story of “The Rocky Mountain Mystery,” which will head the new programme at the Majestic Theatre to-night and to-morrow night. A second big offering will be “Three-cornered Moon,” a comedy of ail unusual type. SOCIAL CLUB’S DANCE. The social club in connectiqn with the East Ashburton Amateur Swimming Club held an enjoyable dance in the Hampstead Hall last evening, when there was a good attendance. Music was supplied by Mrs A. Mitchell, and Mr L. Armstrong played an extra. Mr R. Keeley was.M.C.
