SERIOUS FIRE
VALUABLE PROPERTY LOST.
(Per Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, June 29,
A fire that destroyed valuable records, plans, and maps, and some unreplacablo documents, the whole of which, considering their cost of preparation, and the compilation of data over the years, are valued at £20,000, occurred late on Saturday night, when the Waimakariii River Trust’s works office on the Stewart’s Gully road, at Chaneys, was completely destroyed.
The office also contained a large number of valuable instruments, many of which were owned by the members of the Trust’s staff, and a collection of books belonging to the engineer, Mr H. W. Harris, which is valued at £l5O. Mr Harris also lost instruments valued at £250, and Mr C. O. Barnett, the assistant engineer, instruments valued at £IOO.
The office building and its contents were insured but the insurance money will not compensate for a fraction of the damage caused by the fire. The building itself is insured for £135 with the Guardian Company, and the survey and field instruments, plans and hydrological instruments for the sum of £IOOO.
