COSTLY WAR HISTORY
THE AUSTRALIAN FORCES.
ABOUT £70,000 SPENT.
CANBERRA, July 13. Two further volumes of the Australian National War History are practically ready for publication, leaving only two more to complete the work. The final two—one of which will complete the historical side, and the other, medical aspects—will probably be issued next year. The task will then have taken about 17 years, instead of the five originally contemplated, and the cost, according to an estimate by the Auditor-General, will be about £loo, ooo'. The two volumes about to be published deal with action in Flanders and .France and with activities within Australia during the war period. The last volume will coinplete the history ol the Australian forces in Europe. The Auditor-General, Mr Cerutty, recently criticised the progress of the work, which, he stated, had been unjustifiably costly, largely “because much detailed matter of insufficient importance had been included.” It lias been argued in reply that the meticulous details is what gives the work its worth. The cost of the history so far has been about £70,000. It is expected, however, that sales, which have been disappointing, will improve in the future.
