BILLIARDS.
BILLIARDS BALK-LINE RULE. IS IT OFFICIAL? Some references to the much-dis-cussed balk-line rule in billiards were made by Mr F. W. Vosseler when speaking in Wellington on Monday of the conditions under which Walter
Lindrum and Clark McConachy were attempting to create a new world’s record. It would be found, he said, that in the course of big breaks a warning would be given when the players were 20' points short of each 200 of a break. That was because of the new balk-line rule, and it indicated to the .players that between then and the point of reaching the 200 they would have to'send their hall across the balkline. “It is the latest rule,” he said, “but we do not know whether it has been accepted or adopted. However, the players are taking no risks.” The rule imposed a very great handicap upon the player’s, lie explained, as it meant that, although they liatl the halls running in good position, a big change had to he effected, and this interfered seriously with the continuity of big breaks. “There are some who say,” he added', “that the idea of this tampering with the rules at the present time is largely to bring down Australian players to the level of the English, players so as to make the competitions not so cue-sided.”
