THE DAVIS CUP CONTEST. UNITED STATES TO CHALLENGE. (Received This Day, 9 a.m.) LONDON, July 24. The United States defeated Germany in the inter-zohe final of the Davis Cup contest, and will meet England in the challenge round. The singles played to-day resulted
AV. L. Allison (United States) defeated M. Henkfcl, 6-1, 7-5, 11-9. J. D. Budge (United States) defeated G. von Cramni, 0-6, 9-7, 8-6, 6-S. Henkel never threatened to overcome Allison, who always appeared to be able to develop extra pressure when it was essential. Nevertheless, Henkel fought strenuously and brilliantly, and saved two match points at 7-6 against him in the third set. The match was fought out determinedly, many games going several deuces. Von Gramm, feeling the effects of his.previous matches, was unable to stand up against the American’s aggressiveness and brilliant backhand. The third set was fiercely contested, leaving von Cranim without reserve to stand increased pressure from Budge, who took six games in succession for the match.
In the earlier singles matches the results were: —Budge beat M. Henkel, 7-5, 11-9, 6-3, 6-1; von Oramm beat Allison, 8-6, 6-3, 6-4. In the doubles Allison and J. van Ryn beat von Gramm and Lund, 3-6, 6-3, 5-7, 9-7, 8-6.
