FOURTH BIRTHDAY PARTY.
AN ENJOYABLE GATHERING
The monthly meeting cf the Ashbur-to-n District Women's Institute yesterday afternoon took the form of a party to celebrate the fourth birthday of the Institute. The president (Mrs F. Curtis) presided over a very large attendance.
Mrs Curtis welcomed the visitors, who incuuded Mrs E. M. Begg (president of the Mid-Canterbury Provincial Executive of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union) and delegates from the Allenton, Tinwald, Fairton, Hampstead, Wakanui and AshtonWaterton Institutes.
Mrs P. J. Andrew presented Mrs Curtis with a bouquet on behalf of members, Mrs J. W. Wood presented one to Mrs D. Fitzgerald (vice-presi-dent) and Miss M. Hambley one to Mrs W. J. Minogue (secretary). Mrs R. S. Wilson, congratulated Mesdames Minogue and E. A. Cockroft upon their election as members of the Mid-Can-terbury Federation Committee. The'following musical programme, arranged by Miss L. Watt, was presented:—Piano solos, Misses Elsie Watt and D. Craighead; songs, Mesdames J. B. Culleu, E. G. Craighead and M. Macmillan; elocutionary numbers, Mrs Minogue. The accompaniments were played by Misses L. Watt and Craighead. A musical competition was won by Miss Elisabeth Watt. Mrs W. J. Marshall reported <yn the formation of the Mid-Canterbury Federation and a sum of £5 was voted to that body. s It was left to the drama circle to enter a play in the group competition. Mrs Minogue spoke on the forthcoming pageant. The birthday cake, made by Mrs Arthur, was cut'by Mrs E. A. Amos, the four candles being lit by Mrs G. D. H. Hefford. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs Hefford, Miss Hambley and members of the committee. , Mrs J. Bland donated a cake to the Institute and was heartily thanked. Good business was done with mystery parcels.
