WINTRY CONDITIONS TO-DAY. SHARP SHOWERS OF RAIN. Heavy rain fell in Ashburton overnight, and conditions were wintry to--day. Several sharp showers fell during the morning, and although the sun broke through once or twice about mid-day the showers of rain were just as heavy again this afternoon. The rain was driven by a southerly wind, and the temperature was cold.

] For the 24-hour period up to 9 a.m. the rain gauge at the Domain weather station registered 28 points. The barometer is rising. At 9 o'clock this morning the reading was 29.90 inches, compared with 29.77 inches yesterday morning. ■ Extreme temperatures yesterday and last night were 61.2 degrees and 47.3 degrees.

The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oamaru is as follows: Moderate to strong southerly winds. Weather cold and changeable with passing showers. Seas rather rough to rough.
