RATE LIABILITY

MORTGAGE CORPORATION. RELIEF FOR LOCAL BODIES. STATEMENT BY PRIME MINISTER. Advice that the possibility of finding some relief for local bodies in serious difficulties will be gone into has been received by the Ashburton County Council from the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes). On Saturday last the County Council sent to the Prime Minister and Messrs J. Connolly, M.P.. and T. D. Burnett, M.P., a telegram, protesting against the provisions of the Mortgage Corporation Bill, proposing to relieve the Corporation of liability for the payment of rates as mortgagee, and stating that local body finance will be rendered most insecure if such provisions become law.

The text of Mr Forbes' rejjly is as follows:—■

"Your telegram containing representations regarding the clause in the Mortgage Corporation Bill relating to corporation liabilities for rates, duly noted. In reply, I would point out that this clause was very fully considered by the House of Representatives, and passed by that chamber, the other evening. An undertaking has been given, however, to review the problem of local body rating, and when the next budget is under review, to investigate the possibility of providing some relief to local bodies in serious difficulties."
