The decision of Referee Joe Wallis to disqualify Claude Varner (9.1) for continuous butting in his bout with Vernon Cromier (9.1) at Rushcutters Bay on February ll was the first occasion on which such a verdict has been given since the introduction of the nofoul rule. This rule, however, applies only to low hits, infringements being punishable as previously. For two rounds they stood crouched, each resting his head on the other’s chest and sending out short punches. Later, Cromier improved and managed to show some better fighting at long range. He emerged from some close work in the seventh with a cut at the side of the right eye. Wallis cautioned Varner for using his head in close work, and in the ninth round he stopped the contest for another lapse and declared Cromier the winner.
