THE ASHBURTON ASSOCIATION. CRITICISM OF CLOSED DAY. “Oh well, I suppose we will have to grin and bear it,” said the president (Mr F. Pritchard) at a meeting of the Management Committee of the Ashburton County Cricket Association, last night, when a letter was readi from the Town Clerk (Mr W. Patterson) stating that the Borough Council had decided to grant a close day for the Domain Oval on March 23. This is for the Ashburton County Primary Schools’ Sports Association’s annual sports meeting. Besides Mr Pritchard there were present at the meeting Messrs S. \Villis, J. H. Browne, R. H. Biggar, J. B. Nicoll, S. W. Kerr, I. M. Hamilton and IS. M. Cassidy (secretary). “We do not want to stand in the way of the school sports,” continued Mr Pritchard, but this should _ have gone through the Sports Association or, on the other hand, an application could have been made to us. The _ school sports meeting is very desirable—we all know that—but a little more reciprocity would not go amiss.” Amended Draw Announced. On the recommendation of the draw committee it was decided that matches postponed from March 2 should be played on March 30, and those postponed from March 16 on March 23. The amended draw is as follows:Senior—March 23: Fairfield y. Ashburton A at Fairfield; Ashburton Bv. Rakaia, at Rakaia; Methven, a bye. March 30—Fairfield v. Ashburton B, at the Oval; Methven y. Rakaia, at Methven; Ashburton A, a bye. . The postponed junior match, r anfield v. Technical, may be played on March 30, or the first Saturday an for the visit to Ashburton on Saturday, Sunday and Monday next of the West Coast team were completed. The entertainment of the City and Suburban junior and colts teams to Ashburton on March 30 weie left to the president and secretary.

BRABIN SHIELD MATCH. i CANTERBURY y. WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, March 11. Wellington was in a strong position when the first day’s play in the annual junior representative match between Wellington and Canterbury for the Brabin Sliiehl concluded to-day. lhe home side batted first and declaied with 321 for nine wickets. Canterbury in the first innings had lost seven wickets for 99 runs when stumps were drawn. The chief feature of Wellington s innings was a score of 101 by one of the opening batsmen, K. Young. He and J. Potier gave the side a good start, putting on 73 runs before the latter was dismissed for 45. Young saw the total reach 227 before he was dismissed. His score included eight fours. The Brabin Shield has been competed for by the two provinces for ten

years. Wellington held the trophy for the first five seasons, and Canterbury, the present holders, have held it for five seasons also. CARR JOINS NOTTS CLUB LONDON, March 10. A. W. Carr has joined Notts Cricket Club as an ordinary member enabling his nomination as a member of the committee. TEAMS FOR SATURDAY.
