POSITION IMPROVES.
FINANCES OF THE DOMINION. UPWARD TREND IN REVENUE. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, March 10. The improved condition of the national finances was referred to by the Minister of Finance (the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates), at the opening of the Kumen 'Show. “We estimated that the Budget would be balanced,” he said, “and after examining the figures for the past.ten months it is clear that tiie revenue is continuing its upward tendency.” An indication of how this year had been a better one than the previous year could be obtained from the figures for the ten months ended January 31. In the period in 1934-35 Customs duties had amounted to £6,206,000, compared with £5,370,000 in the corresponding period of 1933-34. Excise duty on 'beer amounted to £548,000, compared with £545,000; sales tax £1,833,000, 'compared with £1,540,000. The total for the ten months was £8,587,000, against £7,455,000 during the same period in 1933-34. “These improved returns,” concluded the Minister, “have been achieved with no increase in taxation.”
